One copy, seven figures, and the auction hasn't opened yet
Goldin's 2026 Pokémon 30th Anniversary auction opens on October 15. Its headline lot has already crossed $1 million. ICv2 reported on October 7 that pre-bids on a PSA 8 1997 Japanese Promo Gold First Place First Tournament #1 Trophy Pikachu are above $1 million, including the buyer's premium. ICv2 also reports that it is the only copy in PSA's census.
That last fact sets the price more than the grade does. A PSA 8 is not a gem. On most modern cards, an 8 is the grade collectors walk past on the way to the 10s. Here it doesn't matter. With a census of one, there's no PSA 9 or 10 to trade up to and no second copy to anchor a comp. Every bid is a bid on the card's existence, not its condition.
What's in the sale
The Trophy Pikachu leads a catalog that ICv2 says also includes:
- a PSA 10 2000 Black Star Eevee League Promo
- a BGS Pristine 10 2004 Skyridge Holo #H9 Gengar
- a 2000 Black Star Holo #13 Venusaur Promo
- a sealed 2005 Pokémon EX Deoxys booster box
That's a cross-section of the top of the hobby: tournament prizes, e-Reader-era holos at perfect grades, and sealed product from the EX era. The auction runs under the franchise's 30th anniversary banner, the same framing Goldin used for its "Pokémon 151" sale earlier this year.
Where it sits on 2026's price ladder
Three public data points define Pokémon's top tier this year:
| When | Card | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feb 2026 | Pikachu Illustrator | $16,492,000 including buyer's premium, the public-auction record | Japan Today |
| Sept 2026 | PSA 10 Torchic Gold Star (Team Rocket Returns), at Alt | $2,700,000 | ComicBook.com |
| Oct 2026 | PSA 8 First Place Trophy Pikachu, at Goldin | over $1,000,000 in pre-bids, with the auction not yet open | ICv2 |
What these three share is scarcity at the population level. Character still matters: two of the three are Pikachu. But at the top of the market, scarcity can overpower character popularity, and the Torchic result shows it. In the same Alt sale, a PSA 10 Charizard Gold Star (Dragon Frontiers) sold for $393,000. The Torchic sold for roughly seven times the Charizard, a character with a fraction of Charizard's name recognition. At this level, the census count and the grade can outweigh the name on the card.
Why it matters
Pre-bids are not a hammer price, and we'll treat them as what they are: a floor that someone has committed to before the live auction starts. Two things are worth watching between now and the close:
- Whether the bidding goes past the floor. A sole-census card with seven figures committed before the open tests how many buyers at this level are active this month. The Torchic and the Illustrator each had to clear their own rooms. This one's room is forming in public.
- How the rest of the catalog performs. If the Trophy Pikachu pulls bidders into the sale, the Eevee League Promo and the Gengar get a deeper pool than they would on their own. Strong results there would say more about breadth in the high-end market than the headline lot can.
What to watch
- October 15: the Goldin Pokémon 30th Anniversary auction opens.
- The close: the final price on the Trophy Pikachu against today's $1M+ floor.
- November 6: Delta Reign releases in English. That's modern supply hitting the market in the same window.
Figures are as reported by the sources below on the dates shown. This is market data and commentary, not investment advice.
